Thursday, October 26, 2017 - Red Rock Canyon State Park, Cantil, CA, Day 2, 0 Miles, 2,284.2 Towing Miles For the Trip

There was already enough moon to make photos of the milky way difficult, but I took a few, as well as a 115 minute exposure to make a star circle. The bottom 2 photos are experiments with vertical panoramas to get a bit more mountain & milky way in the image.

It didn't cool off that much overnight, only going down to 56°F, 60°F in the trailer. The furnace didn't even come on. I was able to listen to Morning Edition on the internet at KAZU, a California station; I couldn't log on to my regular Phoenix stations. By noon it was up to 85°F outside & 80°F in the trailer. I walked around the campground loop & took a few photos, including a couple of the open roof vault toilets. I guess that one doesn't get used as much. While it has no doors, so you probably should sing out before entering, it did have toilet paper. The roofed toilets have none, and the floors are a mess; it looks like no one has checked them in days. It can't be the crowds - as far as I could see, there were only 3 other campers in the park last night. I did, for the first time, see some signs of management. A Parks & Recreation truck drove by this morning, and a bit later, a van with a California State Parks sticker on the door. Neither stopped to check the bathrooms...

Around 12:30 I headed to the Hagen Canyon trail at the entrance to the park to take a couple of "Red Rock" photos. I didn't do the entire trail (too hot & I've done it before) in cooler weather.

I'm back at the trailer, taking advantage of the campground WiFi, which is working for the first time since I've been to the park. The shade from the rock behind my trailer is just starting to move across it so it should cool down soon.

Yesterday's plan was to head for the Texas Springs campground at Death Valley tomorrow, but it is around 10°F warmer there, with 20° warmer predicted nights, so I think I'll stay here. Today hit 93°F, but the weekend is predicted to be cooler (mid 80's) and since I have internet access, why not? The campground is getting crowded - there are 5 - 6 campers that I can see from my site, and probably more around the corners.

Dinner was a Bubba Burger & pickled beets.

Hopefully, until tomorrow! -
