Tuesday, August 28, 2018 - Kemo Sabay Campground, Hot Springs, SD, 140.7 Miles , 2,826.3 Miles for the Trip
We are back in South Dakota. The plan was to visit Wind Cave for one of the tours. We stopped on the way to the campground & booked the Fairgrounds tour, a 1 1/2 hour trip through the cave, and a different one from my 2011 visit.
The cave is not one of my favorites - it is cold (both in temperature & in look & feel. Fairly dry, but it does have some unique formations, including the country's largest collection of box wood formations. I took lots of photos and added some to the Wind & Jewell Cave page. I admit to warming up the images a bit.
Here is a sample:

The campground is described as "Rustic", and it does a good job of meeting the description. $27.05 for a full hookup site on grass (although the sewer is too far away to use), good side to side, but not quite level front to back. Since one of us had to unhook anyway to drive back to the cave, I volunteered. There are two bathrooms labeled men & women, each with a single sink & toilet. No showers. Lots of stored & abandoned trailers throughout the park. It is fine for one night, but not high on my list of recommendations. We did try for other campgrounds in the area, but this was the only one that wasn't full. We did discover that there were open sites at the Wind Cave National Park, but they were not reservable, so being this close to Labor Day, we decided not to take the chance on the availability of space.
We decided to drive into Hot Springs for a Chinese Buffet for dinner. We think the waterfall photo is the hot spring, but are not sure. In any case, we included a photo.
