A note on Photographs - All of us are taking pictures - I'll do my best to give photo credits with an initial, but if I miss one be sure to let me know! J = Jon, D = Don, A = Anne & C = Carol. You can usually tell Anne's - her camera puts the date on the image! Also, most of the images are scans of old & faded prints, so the quality may not be all that hot.

July 13 - Canyonlands Campground, Moab, UT (267mi)

Today we sent out our third batch of postcards. Hope you got yours! We are headed to Moab & Arches. We took UT 12 & UT 24 for the trip. This is a road you want to travel. It is kind of narrow, lots of curves & hills, so the driver has to pay more attention to the road than the scenery, but the scenery is beautiful! We made a number of stops for pictures & short hikes.

We went from UT Rt 12 to Rt 24 at Torrey, UT, did a short stint on I 70, and down US 191 into Moab. We decided to stay at Canyonlands Campground for the night, Site 110.

Moab is an interesting town. Lots of shops, bars, restaurants, even a brewery (I now have a another tee shirt.) Lots to do - bike riding, white water rafting on the Colorado or Green river, rent a jeep & hit the trails, etc. I'm sure we could stay here for a couple of weeks & not run out of things to do, but there is still a lot more of the West to see.

July 14 - Arches National Park & Mesa Verde, CO (176mi)

Our next stop is Arches National Park, about 5 miles north of Moab. Utah has some of the nicest National Parks in the country. Although Arches has a campground (The Devils Garden Campground) near the end of the main park road, it is fairly small, doesn't take reservations (not that we have made any so far on this trip) so it is difficult to get into. It would be a beautiful place to stay... Anyhow, we drove through the park, ate lunch near the Skyline Arch, and hiked a number of the trails. Don & Anne took the 3 mile hike to Delicate Arch while Carol & I made some short hikes to some of the other arches.

After touring the park, we headed south on US 191 & at Monticello switched to US 666 (The Devil Highway) to Mesa Verde National Park, CO. We stopped for the night at A & A Campground. A pretty place just outside the park with the campsites names by street number signs rather than plane numbers. We are in 25th Street. They have a hot tub with a view of the mountains - not too shabby!
