A note on Photographs - All of us are taking pictures - I'll do my best to give photo credits with an initial, but if I miss one be sure to let me know! J = Jon, D = Don, A = Anne & C = Carol. You can usually tell Anne's - her camera puts the date on the image! Also, most of the images are scans of old & faded prints, so the quality may not be all that hot.

July 26 - Devil's Tower, WY (309mi)

We left Cody following US Rt 14. Along the way we passes a bar that Anne insisted was hers. See the photo below. Made a short stop at Shell Falls then on to I 90 at Ranchester, WY. We looped up US Rt 14 & WY 24 to stop for the night at the Devil's Tower KOA. The campground is right at the base of the tower, and shows a very scratchy copy of the movie "Close Encounters" every night. The campground was OK, however all they had was cold showers. We managed to set up the tents without Carol ever seeing the tower. Anne stopped by after setting up their tent (takes them about 30 seconds) and said "Isn't the tower great?" Carol said "yes, but I thought you could see it from the campground." We all said "Turn Around!" It is quite a piece of rock. We drove in to the visitor's center - among other things they have climbing classes - we didn't. I put a 500mm lens on my camera (the only time I used it on the entire trip) and got a close up of a couple of climbers. On the way in we passed a large Prairie Dog colony - it was fun to watch them.

July 27 - Crazy Horse & Mount Rushmore (150mi)

We continued east, exiting I 90 at US Rt 16 to head to the Crazy Horse Monument. Although we didn't take the tour, we stopped at the visitor's center. Quite a project - they have a long way to go. After that we continued into South Dakota, stopping for the evening at Mount Rushmore National Monument. We are in site 505! of the Mount Rushmore KOA. A hugh campground with over 600 sites. Even though it was large, our campsite was nice. We set up the tents & headed to Mount Rushmore. Stayed through the evening to see the presentation. They are in the middle of rebuilding the visitor's center, but we found a nice place to sit among the trees on the hill facing the carvings.
