2011 Visit to Upper Antelope Canyon

On a 2012 cross country trip I stopped at Page, Arizona to visit the Lower Antelope Ccanyon. It is a very different experience from last year's visit to the upper canyon. Physically, the lower canyon is deeper, a bit more difficult to go through, but includes stairways for the steepest sections. Other differences are a bit less color, fewer "beams" of light, and the best part - fewer people. I'm sure that one of the reasons was because I was the first one into the canyon for the day, but I only saw 4 other people over the 2 hours I was in the canyon. I did see a tour being organized as I came out at 10:30AM, but it was a small group of about 10 people.

I do suggest visiting both canyons, and if you are going to do it in one day, visit the lower canyon as early in the morning as possible.

I listed a number of suggestions for photographers on the Upper Canyon page so I won't repeat them here. There are some tour differences - at the lower canyon you need to show that you have a DSLR camera & tripod to be allowed to tour on your own. They give you a "Photographer's Pass" which has the time you leave the ticket booth written on it. You are on your own & can take as much time as you want. The base charge of $26.00 is for 2 hours; there is a charge per hour for longer stays, with a limit of 4 hours.

The images are in order from the start of the canyon to the end. I took many more images - these are just a sample:
