We got even with the kids by getting up & out early! Actually, we didn't make all that much noise, but it sure was tempting. I did run my coffee grinder. I'm a bit of a coffee nut - I only drink one cup (well, mug) a day, but I really like fresh ground coffee. I have a small 300 watt inverter that makes 120v from the car battery, so I can run light loads, including my coffee grinder. Unless I'm cooking a full breakfast, I heat the water on a small white gas single burner campstove.

Anyhow, we were off heading across SD on US 212. We stopped for a late breakfast at a small diner on the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation. I had over easy eggs, Carol ordered pancakes. When the waitress asked how many pancakes Carol wanted she decided 3 would be plenty. When they came, each was the size of a 10" dinner plate! Needless to say, I got to eat a lot of pancakes as well as my eggs. And, speaking of eggs, they were the best I've ever eaten. I believe she went out behind the diner & took them out from under the chickens. Quite a meal. I didn't keep track of the name of the diner, but it was the only one in Eagle Butte, SD at the time.

After breakfast we took a side trip south on SD 79 to Sturgis, SD and picked up US 14 through Deadwood to visit the Homestake Mine in Lead, SD. Quoting from their website, "Before its closing in 2002 Homestake Gold Mine was the oldest, largest and deepest mine in the Western Hemisphere, reaching more than 8000 feet below the town of Lead." It sure is a big hole in the ground!

That was about all the excitement for the day. That night we stopped at the Arrowhead Motel in Sundance, WY, another Budget Host motel, but at $55.00, quite a bit cheaper than the one in Shakopee, MN.
