I'm currently on a trip around the US & Canada, and stopped to visit the John Day Fossil Bed National Monument about 30 miles west of John Day, Oregon.
It is a huge monument with three main sections, the Sheep Rock Unit where I visited the Blue Basin, Foree, and the Visitor Center, and the Painted Hills Unit where I visited many different beautifully colored hills. I skipped the the third section, the Clarno Unit. By huge, I managed to drive almost 300 miles (including the drive from & back to John Day.) Definitely worth a visit. There are many short hikes that take you through the formations.
