A note on Photographs - All of us are taking pictures - I'll do my best to give photo credits with an initial, but if I miss one be sure to let me know! J = Jon, D = Don, A = Anne & C = Carol. You can usually tell Anne's - her camera puts the date on the image! Also, most of the images are scans of old & faded prints, so the quality may not be all that hot.
July 5 - Colorado City, TX (295mi)
Everyone says that Texas is big - I believe it. We are still in the state after driving all day. Stopped for the night at Lake Colorado City State Park in site 48. I don't know if the cattle ranch is part of the park, but it provided a chance to see what "Texas Longhorns" look like. They do have long horns! They also have a nice warm lake to swim in. We also saw our first cactus plants.

We are heading for Carlsbad Caverns National Park in New Mexico. Found White City RV Park just outside the caverns & moved into sites 127 & 128. Not necessarily the best campground we've been in - mostly rocky sites (although to be honest it probably is our own fault since we are asking for electric sites, so we are often put in places that are designed for RVs rather than tents) & lots of biting flies, but it is convenient. After setting up, we went to the Caverns & toured the Big Room via elevator & watched the bats fly out of the natural entrance at dusk. The elevator takes you 754' underground to what must be the deepest snack bar & restrooms in the country. The guided tour gives lots on information about the history of the cave. We were all impressed by the size (8.2 acres) of the "Big Room" (Maybe that's why they call it the big room?) Anyhow, an impressive tour. The next morning we went back to the cavern & did a self guided tour via the Natural Entrance - we cheated & took the elevator on the way back.

After walking through the cave we headed for El Paso, TX, which, if you look at a map, is not backing up - as they say, Texas is big!
