A note on Photographs - All of us are taking pictures - I'll do my best to give photo credits with an initial, but if I miss one be sure to let me know! J = Jon, D = Don, A = Anne & C = Carol. You can usually tell Anne's - her camera puts the date on the image! Also, most of the images are scans of old & faded prints, so the quality may not be all that hot.

July 22 - Independence Pass, Aspen & New Castle, CO (124mi)

Well, it was time to go. We decided to take CO Rt 82 to check out Aspen & Independence Pass (12,095') on the way to Yellowstone. Another beautiful road, although Aspen is a bit too much for me, and on top of that the gas is the most expensive ($1.75) so far on the trip. If we had started out a bit earlier, we would have stopped at the Maroon Bells - I remember them from our trip in the 70's, but we were still a bit tired from our Hanging Lake adventure, so we saved them for next time. Actually, we didn't get much further than we did with Dick & Anne yesterday. We passed Basalt, where County Rt 4 runs into CO 82, drove through Glenwood Springs, and stopped for the night at the KOA in New Castle, CO, Site 46.

July 23 -Hart Ranch Campground, Lander, WY (340mi)

After a relatively early start, we headed up CO 13 along side the White River National Forest, through the town of Craig, and into Wyoming, where the road changed to WY Rt 789. When we reached I 80, we backtracked a bit to US 287, and continued until we hit Lander where we camped for the night at the Hart Ranch Campground. It had just changed hands - used to be the K-Bar RV Park. The new owners are moving a ghost town into the park - nothing is open yet, but it looks like it will be fun for the kids.

July 24 -The Tetons & Yellowstone (244mi)

It was a relatively short drive up US 287 into the Grand Teton National Park. Wow, the combination of the sharp edged mountains & lakes is magnificent! We are really pushing it - we are going to try to see both the Tetons & Yellowstone in 2 days. I know we should spend more time at each, but time is moving on - we have to be back in Oswego the first week of August. Anyhow, we spent most of today driving & hiking around the Tetons, then headed up to Yellowstone National Park, stopping for the night at a KOA West of the park, Site 118. A very large park, lots of neighbors, but nice. Tomorrow we will continue touring Yellowstone.
