August 4, 2001 (0mi) - Lots of Big Balloons!

The night went well, even without shorepower. We don't really know how long to expect the battery to last but since there is only one 12v house battery, is probably isn't long - we didn't do much overnight & it was down to 1/4 charge by morning. We ran the generator to recharge things & so we could use the microwave to make breakfast. Don & Anne stopped by to take us to the Festival (they spent the night at their house.) Spiedies are a Binghamton thing. They also sell them at the NY State Fair in Syracuse, and Salamida's State Fair Spiedie Sauce is available in many area stores, but other than locals that have moved elsewhere, few people have heard of Spiedies outside of upstate NY. The pure Spiedie is grilled marinated lamb served on a slice of italian bread, but they are also available in chicken, beef, and pork. Salamida also makes a couple of other "Spiedie" sauces. In any case, they are delicious, worth a stop any time you are passing through Binghamton, NY. We have always made our own, but Wikipedia lists a couple of Binghamton locations where they can be purchased either ready to grill or ready to eat!

The Spiedie Fest & Balloon Fest has been running in Binghamton since 1982, and is currently attracting over 80,000 people to the 4 day festival. Each morning & evening, weather permitting, a launch of many hot air balloons take place, with crafts & food available all day long.

I enjoyed photographing the balloons, eating, and, of course, had to buy the official Tee Shirt!
