Saturday, September 8, 2018 - Pagosa Riverside Campground, Pagosa Springs, CO, Day 2, 0 Miles, 3,653.9 Miles for the Trip

We got a late start, but since we were only going to Chimney Rock National Monument, and staying at Pagosa Riverside Campground for tonight, who cares? The park is about 20 miles of so from the campground with a good dirt road entering the monument. We stopped at the visitor center and bought tickets for a guided tour - $7.00 each with the senior pass. Our timing was great; the 12:00 tour started just as we arrived. The 1.5 mile road from the visitor center to the start of the tour was very washboarded; it tossed my GPS off the dash.

The tour was great, with lots of information about the people living in the area and the restored buildings. Some photos:

After the guided tour, there was an audio tour of a lower section with houses & a Great Kiva. Back at the visitor center there was an opportunity to try throwing an Atlatl, a device that was used before the invention of the bow & arrow. We all tried but no bullseye!

After that we headed back to the campground for a late afternoon of reading, ducking under the awning when light rain showers caught us a couple of times.

Diner was spaghetti, sausage & meatballs, and what would have been watermelon for dessert, but it started to rain, so we packed it in.

Until Tomorrow -
