Our 1996 Trip Across the USA Page 4
Back to Jon Vermilye's Photo & Trip Page
A note on Photographs - All of us are taking pictures - I'll do my best to give photo credits with an initial, but if I miss one be sure to let me know! J = Jon, D = Don, A = Anne & C = Carol. You can usually tell Anne's - her camera puts the date on the image! Also, most of the images are scans of old & faded prints, so the quality may not be all that hot.
June 8 - Luray Caverns & Dark Hollow Falls (66.2mi)
After a night of listening to the pleasant sound of raindrops on the tents, we headed out to visit Luray Caverns. It's a very pretty cave with many different formations.
On the way back we saw a sign for the Dark Hollow Falls at mile 50.7 of Skyline Drive. Well, since I am a sucker for waterfall photos (See my Waterfall Page) why not? Why not is because going to & back from the lowest falls became known as the "Death Walk." Now none of us is in what anyone would refer to as "great shape" & it was a hot & humid day, and we didn't have a guide describing the walk (although I believe there is a typo in the guide I linked to - it is about a 400' not 1400' drop), so those are the excuses, but we all thought we were going to die before we made it back to the cars. It was a bit deceptive - going was all down hill, but you had to return. Anyway, there are two large falls & many cascades.

After hiking out of the Hollow, we drove back to the Big Meadows Campground for another wet evening.
