The Third Annual Oswego Dragon Festival, Page 2

Saturday, September 6th -

I stopped at the park around 8:00AM, and even that early I had to park 2 blocks away from Breitbeck. Most of the team Easy Ups were up & filled with people. They had a contest for the best decorated shelter so I took some photos of a few of them. An opening ceremony had a dragon lead a parade of the participants around the park. At the end, they painted the eyes on a dragon to bring good luck to the event.

After that, the races got underway. I tried to take a photo of each group about 1/2 way through the 200 meter race, and one at the finish. At least one of the races was so close I couldn't tell who won, but the set up at the timing booth could make the determination. While up to three boats ran at the same time, they were racing against the clock, not each other; there were different divisions that might be running in the same race, so who ever came in first didn't necessarily win their division.

In any case, around the 8th heat the wind picked up enough to call a halt to the racing. Everyone was holding down the tops of the easy ups - I stopped taking photographs & helped the race timer hold the roof over his equipment. Most of it blew off the table! Eventually the wind died down enough to finish the first section if the race. Unfortunately, it continued to blow up a chop on the race area; enough that the second batch of races & finals were called off. One of the boats in the second to last heats overturned when turning broadside to the wind on the way back to the dock. Everyone got out OK, complete with a tow ashore. So, rather than run offs, the awards were made based on the timing of the first and only runs.

The third page has the photos of the awards.
