Day 25, Wednesday, November 12, 2025 - Lake Somerville State Park, Birch Creek Unit - 235.8 Miles, 1,997.4 Miles for the Trip
As predicted, it warmed up, only going down to 55°F overnight. Since I had a long drive (for me) and a shopping stop, I skipped my morning walk and turned it into a late afternoon walk after setting up at Lake Somerville. I left the park around 9:30.
Mostly 2 lane roads including TX 63, US 190 & TX 21. Lots of passing sections so I never felt like my 65MPH was holding anyone up (most speed limits were 70MPH). I stopped in the Huntsville Walmart, an easy off the main route. Quite a bit of traffic in College Station but not as bad as the time I went through it during what I suspect was a football game. In any case I arrived at Lake Somerville State Park around 3:00, stopped in the office to get my window tag, then headed to Post Oak site 37. Directly across from the bathrooms, a back in site on asphalt deep enough for the trailer & truck with water & electric for $20.00 per night plus a $5.00 per day park fee for a total of $75.00. No reservation fee. Needed 1" side to side and the tongue lifted by 7". I had to unhook anyway because I have a Friday appointment for a haircut & beard trim in Somerville. Lots of trees & brush between sites - you can't see your neighbor (if there were any - the campground has 60 sites and there are only about 6 of us here).

At the office the woman who checked me in mentioned that there are a number of eagles here in the park. During my walk I took the real camera, but only saw a couple of turkey vultures. They do look great soaring overhead until you get close. Seeing them on the ground kills any illusion that they are magnificent.

Almost every time I see them I'm reminded of a day at Letchworth State Park in NY where a woman and her kid watched a flock of turkey vultures soaring over the dam and mom told the kid "Look at the Eagles!" I didn't have the heart to say anything.
After my walk I headed back to a cooling off trailer. I'm running the AC since it is 83°F outside & 81°F in the trailer. The nights are predicted to be cool, so I hope won't need to run it after dinner. Now, at 5:00 it is down to 77°F outside & 76°F (the set temperature) in the trailer.
Dinner was an Amy's Enchilada with Spanish Rice & Beans bowl.
Until Next Time -
