I've stayed at Kodachrome Basin State Park in both 2011 & 2012. The name of the park was given by the National Geographic Society after a 1948 visit. A walk along any of the trails in the park, particularly at sunrise or sunset, will show off the wonderful colors of the formations. It is also a long distance from any city lights - a great place for photos of the stars.
Grosvenor Arch is close to the park; about 10 miles south of the park on Cottonwood Drive, a good gravel road as long as it isn't wet. If you have the time, Cottonwood Drive goes through the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument all the way to US 89 near Page, AZ. It is not a shortcut to Page - while if it has been recently graded and is dry, it is drivable in a passenger car but a high clearance vehicle is recommended.
Within the park there is a 1 mile trail to Shakespeare Arch.
